Hazardous Area Heating and Control Solutions

Constant Heat Flux Hazardous Area Electric Flanged Immersion Heaters

Flanged Immersion Heaters are used widely throughout industry where a fluid needs to be heated.

They typically range in size from a few kilowatts to a few megawatts. Grimwood Heating uses proven methods to determine the fluid flow through the heater coupled with the heat transfer from the elements. Correct determination of the Heat Transfer Coefficient for a given set of design parameters will allow a suitable heater to be designed for a specific application.

    Process Heaters from Grimwood Heating

Grimwood Heating has extended their signature range of heaters for hazardous areas. The range includes heaters from as small as 1kW in a DN25 pipe through to units over 600kW in DN400 pressure vessels fully compliant with AS1210 and with the electrical aspects certified as meeting the requirements of the IECEx scheme for potentially explosive atmospheres.

Grimwood Heating is unique amongst Australian manufacturers of circulation heaters in that they can provide the product and application engineering expertise to optimize the design for each application. This ensures customers are provided with products meeting their needs. Whether it is heating CIP solutions for a water treatment plant, anticrystalisation heaters for caustic storage, or fuel gas heaters for natural gas pipelines, Grimwood Heating has the expertise to engineer the process heater, inline heater or pipeline heater for the application.

Grimwood views every application of a process heater, inline heater or pipeline heater as unique, and Grimwood will not try and force the customer to pick a unit from the standard catalogue. Grimwood will review the process conditions and engineer a heater for those conditions. The factors which influence the design of the heater include the flow rate, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the fluid.

By designing and manufacturing in Australia, Grimwood reduces lead times and improves the flow of information to ensure the product is delivered on time. We can design, manufacture and deliver an IECEx certified Hazardous Area unit within weeks of the order placement compared to many months by northern hemisphere suppliers.

    Examples

Flanged Immersion Heaters may be installed in a tank to heat static fluids
or into a pressure vessel so that fluids can be heated while flowing in a pipeline

What are some typical applications for Flanged Immersion Heaters?
CIP solution heating for water treatment plants

    Anticrystalisation heaters for caustic storage

City Gate Regulator Heaters for natural gas city gate regulator stations to overcome the Joule-Thompson effect during pressure reduction.

Fuel gas heaters for natural gas compressor stations in high pressure gas pipelines to overcome the Joule-Thompson effect during pressure reduction.

Seal gas heaters to prevent condensation of the process gas in the seal cavity of gas compressors.

Oil heaters to maintain process temperature and viscosity

    Oil outflow heaters

Water heaters for industrial processes and cold start or black start heaters for processes with hot oil or steam heating

    Solvent reboilers

    Ammonia vaporizer heaters

    Components of the System

    There are 3 main components:
THE ELEMENT BUNDLE, THE PRESSURE VESSEL AND THE CONTROL PANEL

    THE ELEMENT BUNDLE
The element bundle comprises the main heater flange (tubesheet), that enables the heater to be fitted to a tank or vessel. The flange is fitted with the appropriate number and design of elements for the application. The elements are terminated inside an IECEx certified flame proof terminal enclosure.

    THE PRESSURE VESSEL
Pressure vessels are quality manufactured to AS1210 or ASME standards and the client is provided with a full MDR. The vessels are typically registered in the state in which they are to be installed.

    THE CONTROL PANEL
Control Panels are custom manufactured to suit the specifications of each application.
Where the heater is in a hazardous area, the control panel must be installed in a safe area.
They are typically infinite controlled using thyristor stacks, which is a great improvement over the old technology of staged control using electro-mechanical contractors.
Thyristors provide for greater efficiency and comply with standard electromagnetic interference requirements.
Control systems are available to SIL1, SIL2, or SIL3 to IEC60511.

Advantages of Grimwood Hazardous Area Heaters

    PRICES CAPITAL COSTS
Flanged immersion heaters are simple in design and compact in size
They involve relatively few static components, typically the heater, the vessel and the control panel.
They compare favourably with other heaters such as water bath heaters

    MAINTENANCE COSTS
Once a high quality designed and manufactured flanged immersion heater is installed it will be maintenance free for many years of service, however, annual inspections are recommended
There is less need, and therefore less cost outlay, for backup components to maintain critical processes

    RUNNING COSTS
Flanged immersion heaters are very efficient. They directly heat the product with the infinite thyristor control, to the exact temperature set point Therefore no energy is wasted by the heater Other heating methods are less efficient, as they heat indirectly and have greater losses.

Grimwood Flanged Immersion Heaters are worth serious consideration in most applications!
